How to build a successful online store?


I have a 20-year career as an online retailer and more than 15 years of helping other online retailers succeed. So I've had the opportunity to experience and do things from both sides. This has been a huge help in my current role. At Digiteam, I'm Head of eCommerce and I'm basically responsible for the success of our e-commerce customers.

Based on my experience, I would like to highlight five important observations in the development of an e-commerce business that will lay the foundations for success:

1. Business idea

The first step is to check whether your business idea has a chance of success online. A bad business idea will not work anywhere and some good business ideas will not work online. As a rule, good business ideas will also work online, at least with some refinement, but it is still advantageous to be able to abandon a bad idea at this point.

2. Strategy, competitive advantage, planning and implementation

Developing your online store and digital marketing as a whole requires planning. It is worth developing a digital marketing strategy and focusing on competitive advantage. Without a sovereign competitive advantage, it is difficult to succeed online. Based on the strategy, a digital marketing plan with relevant metrics is developed and implemented as quickly as possible. Well-planned when it is not yet fully done.

3. Budget and human resources

You need to set aside a sufficient budget for digital marketing! All too often, people are operating with almost minimal budgets. Often people try to do digital marketing on top of other work, or there is one super talent in the house who can do everything. Such super-talents are few and far between, and it is easy for the workload to become excessive and the results to suffer. Of course, the above is understandable to a certain extent if the objectives and plans to achieve them are missing or unclear.

4. Proactivity

In digital marketing, there are cases almost every day where the activity is almost entirely reactive. A lack of planning and commitment leads to reactivity. In such cases, the benefits that can be achieved through digital marketing are significantly reduced. Successful digital marketing, if it is to realise its full potential, requires not only good planning but also proactivity on all sides. Proactivity also ensures that the plan can stay ahead in a rapidly changing world.

5. Confidence - Moderation is the key!

The overall success of the strategy, plan, implementation and measurement requires transparency and strong trust from all parties. We have become accustomed to everything happening quickly in the digital world. This has probably led to the idea that results are also expected immediately. However, successful digital marketing requires a long-term approach. Along the way there will be successes and failures. It is good to be aware of this fact and patience will certainly be required from time to time. The digital marketing plan will reduce worries if the objectives and agreed metrics can be found in the digital marketing plan. Measurement is successful when analytics are correctly installed by professionals.
